Expert Advice - Choosing a Carpet Style

Jim Aaron, our VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, shares some information on the different carpet styles that are available.

Types of Carpet

Are you considering carpets for your next renovation project? Perhaps you’ll be surprised to learn that there are many different types of carpeting, with different varieties intended to address various needs.

Pile and fiber material are both important factors in determining your carpeting’s intended function. “Pile” is a term used for the density of fibers contained within the carpeting, and those fibers are made using many different materials. Pile determines exactly how your carpeting will function. There are synthetic fibers, such as nylon and polyester, as well as natural fibers, such as wool. Wool is more traditional, while polyester has a softer and more comfortable feel. Nylon fibers are among the most durable.

Here are the basics on commonly-seen pile types:

  • Frieze carpeting has long and twisted fibers, which create soft and casual dimension.
  • Level loop carpeting is dense and low-profiled, making it well-suited for busy spaces.
  • Patterned carpeting has a more formal, patterned appearance with its trimmed, loomed, and varying height fibers.
  • Textured carpeting has a casual look with its long, rougher fibers.
  • Plush carpeting looks and feels like velvet fabric with its thick, soft, cushiony fibers giving it a formal appearance.
